Ok, so quarantine has given you a new work routine, working from home. I have been working from home for years so this is not new for me but it’s also not so easy when you first start out. So, with that in mind, here’s some tried and tested tips for working from home that work for me.
GET A DEDICATED WORK SPACE
Having a space where you specifically go to work can really get you in the right frame of mind. It might be a table, a corner of a room, a study or even a spare bedroom you can convert. In my experience if you can close the door on your home office for privacy and when the work day is done, even better.
MAKE YOUR WORKSPACE COMFORTABLE
It’s important for you to have all the tools you need to work at home, a comfy chair, table at the right height and good lighting are essentials but a comfy home office for me is so much more. I also like to have inspiring quotes, artwork, family photos and music. I also have my home office in a décor that is pleasing to the eye and reflects my creativity. You can easily transform a room on a budget with stores like Ikea and Kmart or pull things you already have in your home to create a home office mood to suit you.
USE A PLANNER AND ONLINE TOOLS
I cannot get by without my planners and to do lists. I use ‘Plan it out’ pads and diaries as well as some online tools to keep my diary and productivity in check.
I cannot express how important it is to get dressed properly even if you are working from home. Do your hair, pop on a touch of makeup and get dressed in clothing that makes you feel good. This will really lift your mood!
CHOOSE A START AND FINISH TIME
Work when you are most productive but set start and finish times. It’s easy to fall into the trap of working around the clock when working from home but this will lead to burnout and less productivity. If you are working around kids then choose some set blocks of time to suit the whole family. Being able to clock off at the end of your work day means you can truly be present for yourself and your friends and family. This also includes social media and emails!
TAKE REGULAR BREAKS
Sometimes I put on a load of washing and when the cycle is finished I hang the wash and take five to enjoy a cuppa outside. Working in blocks of 45 minutes to one hour is when I am most productive, getting up from my desk for fifteen minutes to pat the dog, make a call, have a stretch, prepare dinner keeps me sane!
TURN OFF NOTIFICATIONS
If you can place your phone in another room then do so. Otherwise turn off notifications on your phone and computer so you can work in peace. If social media keeps you connected then prioritise a few fifteen minute blocks in your day to check in.
I keep plants in my office and throughout my home, they purify the air, connect me to nature and just look nice. I also like the weekly ritual of watering and cleaning them to ground me.
DIFFUSE ESSENTIAL OILS
Every single day I diffuse essential oils. I have a diffuser in my office, bedroom and living area, they are the perfect mood enhancer. Whether you need a lift, some motivation or to unwind there is an essential oil blend to help. Read my post on using essential oils in the home here.
MEAL TIMES MATTER
I love an elastic waist but working from home can mean they become essential if you are snacking all day! It is so easy to stand in front of the fridge or pantry and graze on all the things! Be prepared, plan healthy and filling snacks and take regular breaks. Remember to stay hydrated too, keep a water bottle on your desk and one in the living area, it may even pay to set an alarm every hour to remind you to drink some water.
If you're working from home and it's new to you then cut yourself some slack, especially if you are also kid wrangling. While you may work 8 hours a day in your regular workplace please know that productivity from home may be higher or lower than normal and you may actually work less hours at home and that's ok. Just be kind to yourself
