Remember when you started throwing off the blanket at night? You figured it was a warm night right? Then you started feeling for swollen glands, thinking you 'must' be coming down with something. Then insomnia set in and suddenly you morphed into Oscar the grouch. Ummmm, welcome to peri menopause sista!
Menopause starts with peri menopause, sure some women never notice that stage (who are those women) but trust me, it all starts with the peri, moves to full blown menopause and thankfully I can tell you there is light at the end of the tunnel when you actually come out the other side.
So what are the typical symptoms of peri-menopause?
Ohhh the list can be long for some but typically you may experience night sweats, insomnia, loss of libido, emotional highs and lows including outbursts of anger, hot flushes, mood swings and irregular and heavy bleeding. Sounds like a party right?!
One other thing I noticed about this menopause/peri-menopause caper is I got fatter around the middle! FFS, as if broken sleep, a surprise bleed through or inappropriately timed sweating wasn't enough. The joy of being a woman!
tips that may work for you
Now there's so much out there that can help, first and foremost I suggest you head to a professional if you need mediacl help ok, but here's some things that may work for you.A HAND HELD FAN
The traditional paper kind and battery operated kind could always be found in my handbag. When that river of sweat started trickling down my back or my head got so hot and prickly I morphed into a ninja, whipping open a fan and furiously flapping it over my crazy menopausal body. For under five dollars a fan will be your most budget friendly and practical purchase whilst in menopause. One small win.
Now this was/is a hard one, I'm pretty sure I was bottle fed sugar syrup as a kid because my addiction to sugary foods is real. At times I've tried to make a healthier change in my diet and cut back on or cut out sugar and every time I do this I feel surprise surprise, soooo much better. My pain levels are less, my eyes and skin are clearer, I sleep better, am calmer and my menopause symptoms were drastically lessened. I'm my own worst enemy, sometimes the brownie wins, who am I kidding it almost always wins!
MOVE YOUR BODY
I'm not gonna lie, I have never really made friends with exercise, the thought of jogging or any other hard core cardio activities makes me wanna spew a little in my own mouth ewww! I prefer exercise that doesn't break too much of a sweat because lord knows there's enough sweating already going on. I also prefer exercise that gets me in touch with my inner goddess and helps rebuild my pretty crappy osteoporosis riddled bones.
So, I do pilates, water walking in the ocean in the warmer months and bike riding. If the budget is tight then I suggest you join a group class or look to community centres for classes that usually cost less than a coffee and a brownie. Doing a little exercise more often is good for the the mind, body and soul. If only that were true for the consumption of brownies :-)
ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES AND PRODUCTS
No I'm not really all that into 'woo woo' but I do dip my toe in from time to time. I want fuss free and easy-peasy though, so I soak in magnesium oil, use high grade essential oils, go all in for accupuncture, have regular stress buster massage, treat myself to facials and dabble in meditation to keep the grouch in his can. I treat these as complementary to what my doctor offers me and for the most part they really do all make a difference.
Personally my periods have shut up shop and my ovaries have left the building but one of the most annoying things about menopause was the surprise break through bleeding or the period that refused to give up. You know the type, hanging on with a whoosh here or a stain there. These days you can get some added protection and peace of mind with period knickers like Modibodi knickers
Modibodi offer knickers with varying absorbency levels, some suitable for periods, some for leakage and some for hot sweaty summers and exercise. They also draw and wick away any sweat or discharge and zap any odours leaving you feeling fresh as a daisy.
As usual, I really hope these tips help, because Meonapuse is hard enough already right.
